Old lithography signed by Ludwig Rohbock and Georg Michael Kurz and included in “Ungarn und Siebenbürgen in malerischen Original-Ansichten”, Gustav Georg Lange, Darmstadt 1863-1864. The picture shows a cart with horses over the Mures bridge near the Vilagos village now Șiria, Arad with the ruins of old fortress on the hils.
Șiria Fortress (Cetatea Șiriei) is a 13th-century medieval ruin perched on a 496-meter hill in the Zarand Mountains, overlooking the Arad Plain. It is one of the most significant historical landmarks in Arad County, offering panoramic views of the “Wine Road” and the surrounding landscape.
Historical Significance
Origins: Built in the 13th century, it served a vital strategic role for five centuries in defending Transylvania’s western border. Famous Owners: The fortress changed hands many times, belonging to figures like Iancu de Hunedoara (John Hunyadi), Matei Corvin (Matthias Corvinus), and the Bathory family.
Military History: It was occupied by Ottoman forces for nearly a century (1607–1693) and served as a garrison for Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul) around 1599–1600.
Destruction: In 1784, Habsburg troops bombarded and destroyed the fortress with artillery to prevent it from being used as a base of resistance during the Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan uprising.
