Title

Rohbock - Turnu Rosu, Rothenturm, Vöröstorony - 1864

Description

Old steel engraving signed by Ludwig Rohbock and Ludwig Oeder, included in the historic work ‘Ungarn und Siebenbürgen in malerischen Original-Ansichten’, published by Gustav Georg Lange (Darmstadt, 1863-1864) with accompanying texts by János Hunfalvy.

The engraving captures the building and people from the border quarantine and customs station of Turnu Rosu.

Historical & Geographic Context

The Location: The Red Tower Pass (German: Roter-Turm-Pass; Romanian: Pasul Turnu Roșu) is a deep, narrow mountain pass cut by the Olt River through the Southern Carpathian Mountains. It connects Transylvania (near Sibiu/Hermannstadt) with Wallachia.

The Subject: A Kontumaz was an official border quarantine and customs station. Established initially in 1770 by plague doctor Adam Chenot, this facility isolated travelers and merchandise arriving from the Ottoman Empire to prevent deadly epidemics like the plague from sweeping into central Europe.

Visual Description of the Engraving

Because Rohbock specialized in highly detailed, atmospheric architectural and topographical landscapes, the print follows a distinct romanticized 19th-century structure:

The Settlement: The middle ground features the quarantine compound, depicted as a small cluster of modest buildings, houses, and administrative structures centered around a small chapel.

The Landscape: Towering, steep Carpathian mountain peaks frame both sides of the narrow valley, emphasizing the isolation and strategic bottleneck layout of the pass. Trees and dense foliage snake down the rocky terrain.

The Foreground figures (Staffage): To breathe life into the landscape, Rohbock populated the immediate foreground with an active traveler scene. It illustrates a diverse group of locals, peasants, and waiting travelers interacting along the valley path, highlighting the forced pause required by the border checkpoint.

The Artistic Style: Executed as a masterclass in steel engraving, the print uses incredibly fine, cross-hatched linework. This technique creates a rich contrast between the bright, open sky and the deep shadows cast within the rugged mountain gorges.
